Buccaneers Swept by Falcons in Conference Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Saturday was the start of the MASCAC portion of the softball schedule for the 2019 season. The Bucs hosted the Fitchburg State Falcons at Alison Rollins field, looking for their first victory of the season. Unfortunately, the Falcons upended the Bucs, sweeping the series, 11-0 and 9-0. The two victories were win 99 and 100 for Fitchburg State head coach Merry McDonald, in her 7th season.

 

Game One

How It Happened

The Buccaneers held the Falcons scoreless in the first two innings and came out strong at the plate but were unable to score themselves. In the bottom of the third, Fitchburg broke the scoreless tie on a McKenzie Lambert (Wilbraham, Mass) two-run home run to centerfield. In the fourth inning, the Falcons piled on nine more runs to take an 11-0 lead. Unable to score in the fourth or fifth, the Bucs dropped game one by mercy rule, 11-0.

At The Plate

The Buccaneers had three hits in the game, all by different players, Cochrane, Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.) and Jenna Nalette (Goffstown, N.H.).

Maritime walked just two time and struck out five times while leaving 5 runners on base.

Fitchburg went 15-for-29 at the plate, two players had three hits in the game, and three others had two-hit games

Four players drove in two runs for the Falcons, three players scored more than once.

Fitchburg had three extra base hits in the game, two doubles and the Lambert home run.

The Falcons did not strike out in game one, walked five times and left nine runner on base.

 

Game Two

How It Happened

Fitchburg scored first in game two, plating three runs in the top of the first inning, including a solo home run by Lambert, her second of the day.. While the Buccaneers kept their guests off the board for the next two innings, they were unable to score any runs themselves. The fourth inning was the big inning again for the Falcons, scoring four times to take a 7-0 lead, two runs came across on a Lambert two-run double. Fitchburg capped off game two by scoring two more runs in the top of the fifth and holding the Bucs to no runs, winning game two and sweeping the conference series with a 9-0 victory.

At The Plate

The Bucs only struck out once as a team in game two but could not draw any walks. They had just three hits in the game, Lucia Buzzell (Quincy Mass) had two, including a double, the team's only extra base hit of the day.

The Bucs left three runners on base in game two.

Lundyn Forcier (Woonsocket, R.I.) led the Falcons going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.

Lambert went 2-for-3, driving in four runs and scoring two.

Fitchburg went 12-for-28 at the plate as a team. They walked once, struck out three times and left six runners on base.
