Bucs Swept by Rhode Island College in Season Opener

FRAMINGHAM, Mass – Tuesday marked opening day of the 2019 Buccaneer softball season as the Bucs travelled to Framingham State to hosts Rhode Island College in a non-conference double headers. Having just gotten back from a southern trip to Virginia, the Anchormen were primed for the games against the Bucs who came out of the gate struggling, falling in both games by mercy rule, 26-0 in game one, 12-2 in game two.

 

Game One

How It Happened

RIC opened the scoring in the top of the first, scoring four runs. They added five in the second with the help of back-to-back home runs from Amber Wainwright (Taunton, Mass) and Marissa Cushman (Cranston, R.I.). The Anchormen then broke off a 15-run inning in the third which included Cushman's second home run of the game. They added two more in the fourth to eventually win the game, 26-0 in five innings.

At The Plate

The Buccaneers had one hit in the game, off the bat of freshman Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass) in the 5th inning.

The Bucs drew two walks and left three runners on base in the game.

RIC went 24-for-41 in the game at the plate, scoring the 26 runs. They drew just three walks and left only seven runners on base.

Lead of hitter Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, R.I.) went a perfect 5-for-5 in the game. She scored five runs and drove in a run while also drawing a walk.

Cushman drove in five runs on her two home runs while driving in 10 total in the game on a 3-for-4 game. She scored three times.

 

Game Two

How It Happened

Maritime scored their first run of the season in the bottom of the first inning of game two as captain Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.) reach on a throwing error, allowing Melissa Cochrane (Walpole, Mass) to score from third. That was the follow-up to a one-two-three inning in the top of the first by starting pitcher Malarie Pittsley (Dighton, Mass).  

The Buccaneer lead was short lived as the Anchormen scored seven in the top of the second, hitting for a team cycle in the inning with two singles, a double, a triple from Cushman and a home run by Simmons.

Down 7-1, Maritime scored a second run on a Pittsley single which scored Cochrane to cut the RIC lead to five. In the top of the fourth, the Anchormen added one run and three additions runs in the fifth to take a 10-run, 12-2 lead, which is how the game would finish after five innings.

At The Plate

The Buccaneers put together six hits in game two. Leadoff hitter, Cochrane and two hitter Camryn Roberts-Capak (Marstons Mills, Mass) each had two-hit games.

Cochrane had the lone extra base hit on the day for the Bucs, a triple to lead off the third inning.

Both Maritime runs were scored by Cochrane.

The Bucs drew two walks in the game and struck out on four occasions.

The one through four hitters for RIC had multiple hits in the game, Christin Chiaverini (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Cushman led the way with three each.

Simmons, Chiaverini and Cushman each also had two RBI in game two.

The Anchormen drew no walks but also did not strikeout in the game.

 

Up Next: the Buccaneers travel to Norwich University on Saturday for a non-conference double header with the Cadets. Game one begins at 4pm.
