Murphy Breaks up No-No, Softball Swept

SALEM, Mass. – Massachusetts Maritime Academy's softball team ran into the buzzsaw of Salem State, dropping a doubleheader against an all-around effort by the Vikings. Kaylene Murphy, one of our NCAA D-III Athletes of the Week, broke up a no-hitter in game one with a double and Madison Ovadek had a pair of hits in the nightcap as the Buccaneers lost 15-0 and 10-1.

Game One
The opening frame saw Salem put up nine runs as the Bucs committed three errors. The big blows were a two-out, bases-clearing double by Marisa Sánchez, who was followed by a triple from the bat of Jen Crovo.

Murphy legged out her two-bagger to lead off the third and was sacrificed over by Sarah Monteiro with one out, but Maritime could scratch a run together. Three runs in the third and fourth were the daggers by the Vikings, with Meghan Black (5-3) tossing four one-hit frames with a walk and two strikeouts. Brooke Westmoreland struck out two in scoreless fifth. April Adams, Sánchez, and Crovo all had a brace of hits for the hosts, while the latter pair drove in three apiece.

Meanwhile, Carli Thomas (0-2) gave up only three earned runs in four innings, striking out two.

Game Two

In the rubber match, Salem scored all of its runs in the third inning, with an error leading to four unearned runs. A Chloe Manousos two-run triple and doubles by Dominique Del Vecchio and Crovo were the crucial hits in the frame.

The Bucs had two runners on in the fourth, but could not score. In the fifth, Jill Corazzini started things off with a two-base hit and Lucia Buzzell beat out a bunt single. Corazzini scored on an error, but despite another sacrifice, that was all for the visitors.

Melissa Cochrane (0-4) went the distance for MMA, walking only one in four innings and giving up six earned runs. Ileish Burney (3-5) earned the win with five innings of four-hit, one-walk ball, whiffing one.

Salem improved to 3-1 in the conference and 9-10 overall, while Maritime is winless in MASCAC play (0-4). The Bucs will travel to Becker College on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. twinbill.
