GAME #2 FINAL:          MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME 13, PINE MANOR 0 (5 INNINGS)

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass.) rapped out four hits, including a three-run inside-the-park home run, and drove in four runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from Pine Manor by scores of 15-4 in the opener and 13-0 in the nightcap in a pair of five inning contests played Monday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

The host Buccaneers (7-17) overcame an early 3-0 deficit in the opener by scoring nine times in their first at-bat, as inside-the-park home runs off the bats of Gardner and freshman Jenna Nalette (Goffstown, N.H.) highlighted the rally.  The visiting Gators (2-18) got a run back in the top of the second on an RBI double by junior Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Ak.), but Massachusetts Maritime received an run-scoring groundout from junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) in the third before icing its win in the lid-lifter with a five-run fourth inning outburst on a pair of errors, a two-run double by junior Emily Bacchiocchi (Wareham, Mass.) and an RBI single by sophomore Brooke Miles (Lynn, Mass.) to close out the scoring.

Gardner and Nalette each had two hits and combined to drive in five runs in the opening victory for the Buccaneers, who received two hits each from freshmen Jill Corazzini (Paxton, Mass.) and Allyson Crowley (Leicester, Mass.) as well as a pair of RBI from Murphy and fellow junior Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.).  Nalette earned her third win by going the distance inside the circle for the hosts, as she allowed two earned runs and struck out a career-high nine.  Senior Tiana Jordan (Boston, Mass.) rapped out three hits in the opening setback for Pine Manor, which received two hits from Whiteshield and an RBI single off the bat of freshman Serena Goncalves (Lakeland, Fla.).  Sophomore Amber Schuman (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs while suffering the setback inside the circle for the visitors, as she allowed seven earned runs while striking out two.

Massachusetts Maritime jumped out to an 8-0 second inning lead in the nightcap and scored at least one run in each of its at-bats, as freshman Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.) rapped out three hits and drove in three runs to lead a 14-hit attack.  Miles and junior Sarah Monteiro (North Falmouth, Mass.) each drove in two runs as well for the hosts, who received a run-scoring triple from Corazzini as well as RBI off the bats of sophomore Serena Colbert (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshmen Rachel Turley (Marshfield, Mass.) and Sara Coffey (Norton, Mass.).  Thomas helped her own cause at the plate with three hits and an RBI for the Buccaneers, as she scattered five hits and struck out six to earn her first win of the spring inside the circle.  Whiteshield and Schuman each had two hits in the second game setback for the Gators, as sophomore Kristina Giunta (Boston, Mass.) fanned a pair in going the distance inside the circle while falling to 0-3 on the season.

Massachusetts Maritime and Pine Manor will meet again in a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass. beginning at 4:00 p.m.
