BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in six runs to lead Massachusetts Maritime to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader from Daniel Webster by scores of 8-0 in the opener and 17-0 in the nightcap in five inning contests played Tuesday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field.

Gardner staked the host Buccaneers (2-2) to a 2-0 second inning lead in the opener with a two-run double, and Massachusetts Maritime took control of the lid-lifter with a six-run third inning rally highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of freshman Allyson Crowley (Leicester, Mass.) and a three-run three-bagger by sophomore Serena Colbert (Plymouth, Mass.).  Gardner recorded two of the hosts’ eight hits in the opening game triumph, as freshman Jenna Nalette (Goffstown, N.H.) earned his first collegiate victory inside the circle for the Buccaneers by scattering three hits and striking out five.  Freshman Amber Roberts (Berlin, N.H.) notched a strikeout in her collegiate debut for the visiting Eagles (0-2), who received singles from senior Skyler Evans (Cranston, R.I.) as well as sophomores Danica Nadeau (Monmouth, Maine) and Natalie Pavelock (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).

Massachusetts Maritime scored at least three runs in each of its four at-bats in the nightcap, including a seven-run outburst in the second inning highlighted by a two-run double from freshman Madison Ovadek (Greenland, N.H.).  Sophomore Emily Goodwin (Halifax, Mass.) added a two-run two-bagger in the third for the hosts, who closed out their scoring with a four-run fourth inning rally.  Ovadek rapped out three hits and drive in four runs in the second game victory for the Buccaneers, who received three RBI each each from Gardner and Goodwin to go with a pair of hits (including a double) from junior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.).  Freshman Melissa Cochrane (Walpole, Mass.) scattered four hits and struck out five to earn her first career win inside the circle for Massachusetts Maritime, as she helped her own cause at the plate with four hits and four runs scored in the second outing.  Roberts rapped out a double at the plate and recorded a strikeout in going the distance once again for Daniel Webster, as she allowed eight unearned runs in the nightcap setback.

Massachusetts Maritime’s home doubleheader with Wentworth scheduled for tomorrow afternoon has already been postponed due to the frigid forecast for the region, and the twinbill has been re-scheduled for Wednesday, April 5th at 3:30 p.m.  The Buccaneers return to action on Saturday, April 1st by heading to Worcester State for the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference opening doubleheader for both squads at Noon, while Daniel Webster heads to Franklin, Mass. on Saturday afternoon for a non-league twinbill with Dean beginning at Noon.
