Murphy, Thomas Tabbed As 2017 Buccaneer Softball Co-Captains

The prevailing winds that blow across Taylor’s Point are slowly but surely starting to bring a little warmer air with them, and that means the start of the 2017 Massachusetts Maritime softball season is just around the corner.  As preparations continue for the upcoming campaign, fifth year Head Coach Megan Giammalvo today announced that juniors Carli Thomas and Kaylene Murphy will serve as co-captains for the Buccaneers this spring.

Thomas, a native of Brewster, Mass. and a graduate of Nauset Regional High School, earned second team all-Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference accolades a year ago after batting .415 with 27 hits, three doubles, three homers and 15 RBI at the plate.  Inside the circle, Carli posted five victories (including a one-hit shutout of Maine-Presque Isle) and struck out an even 100 batters in over 141 innings pitched while amassing 22 complete games.

Murphy, a native of Randolph, Mass. and a graduate of Ursuline Academy, batted .250 while starting 25 of 26 games played behind the plate for Massachusetts Maritime, as she collected 18 hits, six doubles and two triples while driving in 10 runs.  Kaylene is now a two-sport team captain, as she also serves in that role for the Buccaneer cross country squad.

“Kaylene and Carli are dedicated leaders who have shown an exceptional commitment to making themselves and their teammates better each day,” Giammalvo, a former standout at Salem State, said of her captains.  “They have helped lay a foundation for success over the last two seasons, and they will work hard to ensure that our program continues to move forward in pursuit of our goals.”

Massachusetts Maritime begins the 2017 season on Thursday, March 16th by hosting Wentworth in a non-league doubleheader at Alison Rollins Field, with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m. EDT.
