Weir Raps Out Single As Softball Drops MASCAC Doubleheader At Salem State

SALEM, Mass. --  Sophomore Cara Crowley (Lynn, Mass.) rapped out five hits, including a homer and a pair of doubles, and drove in 10 runs to lead Salem State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 14-0 in the opener and 19-0 in the nightcap in five inning games played Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.

 

The host Vikings (12-19-1, 5-5 MASCAC) took control of the lid-lifter with 11 runs in their first at-bat, as sophomore Kristin McKenzie (Arlington, Mass.) collected three hits and a pair of RBI for Salem State, which also received two hits and three RBI from Crowley as well as two hits and two RBI each from junior Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.), sophomore Rebecca Krigman (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Jess Raymond (Peabody, Mass.).  Senior Lauren DeCredico (Tewksbury, Mass.) retired all 15 batters she faced (four via strikeout) in pitching a perfect five inning game for the Vikings, as she helped herself at the plate with two hits in improving to improve to 5-8 on the season.  Sophomore Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.) suffered the setback inside the circle in the opener for the visiting Buccaneers (0-14, 0-8 MASCAC).

 

Crowley hit a pair of two-run doubles to go with a three-run fourth inning homer to drive in seven runs in the nightcap triumph for Salem State, which also received a combined five hits and five RBI from Krigman and freshman Olivia Brothers (Peabody, Mass.) in support of freshman Lauren Haberern (Neffs, Pa.), who allowed a hit and fanned three to even her record at 2-2 on the spring.  Junior Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) collected a single in the nightcap setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as freshman Cassidy Nice (Carver, Mass.) went the distance on the mound for the Buccaneers.

 

Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Salem State travels to Westfield, Mass. on Monday afternoon to square off with Westfield State in a MASCAC twinbill that begins at Noon.
