BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --  Senior Michaela Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.) and sophomore Jasmyn McCone (Taunton, Mass.) each rapped out five hits, while junior Melissa Harmon (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drove in five runs to lead Bridgewater State to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday afternoon by scores of 8-1 in the opener and 18-3 in the nightcap in games played at Alumni Park.

The host Bears (25-10, 9-3 MASCAC) jumped out to a 2-0 second inning lead in the opener on a wild pitch and a McCone RBI single, but the visiting Buccaneers (2-21, 0-12 MASCAC) sliced that margin in half in the third on a run-scoring single off the bat of senior Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.).  Bridgewater State extended its edge to 4-1 in the third on junior Jennifer Shaw’s (Brockton, Mass.) lead-off home run and Ferreira’s RBI single, and the hosts added four fourth inning tallies to close out the scoring in the lid-lifter on a two-run double by Ferreira that was sandwiched by a pair of RBI two-baggers by Harmon and junior Jordan McDermott (East Bridgewater, Mass.).

Ferreira finished with three hits in the opener for the Bears, who also received a pair of safeties from Shaw and McDermott in support of sophomore Amber White (Middleboro, Mass.), who scattered six hits and struck out 11 to improve to 13-5 on the spring for the Bears.  Sophomore Crystal Sherman (Charlton, Mass.) rapped out a pair of hits in the opening setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a single from junior Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.).  Junior Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) joined Sherman with two hits as well for the Buccaneers, as she fanned three in going the distance inside the circle.

Bridgewater State took control of the nightcap with a nine-run outburst, including eight tallies with two out, in its first at-bat, as the Bears added six more runs in the second.  Massachusetts Maritime plated all of its second game runs in the top of the third, as Thibeault and freshman Meghan Weir (North Andover, Mass.) collected fielder’s choice RBI and sophomore Amanda Tine (Chelmsford, Mass.) added the third tally on a throwing error.  The hosts received a two-run homer from Harmon as part of a three-run rally over the final two innings to account for the final score, as McCone collected four hits in the nightcap for Bridgewater State, which also received three hits off the bat of junior Brianna Strecker (Waterford, Conn.) and four RBI from Harmon.  Junior Meghan Dunn (Colchester, Conn.) scattered three hits and fanned four to improve to 12-5 for the Bears, who rapped out 19 hits.  McLaughlin, Sherman and senior Christina Colarusso (Middleboro, Mass.) collected safeties in the nightcap setback for the Buccaneers, as sophomore Jennifer March (Pawtucket, R.I.) went the distance on the mound for the visitors.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Newbury in a non-league doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while Bridgewater State heads to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Thursday afternoon for a non-league twinbill with UMass Dartmouth that begins at 3:00 p.m.
