WESTFIELD, Mass. --  Senior Kim Brennan (Douglas, Mass.) rapped out three hits and drove in five runs as Westfield State claimed a share of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference softball championship by sweeping a league doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 19-1 in the opener and 17-1 in the nightcap in games played Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The host Owls (24-9, 11-3 MASCAC), who clinched the top seed and the right to host next week’s MASCAC Championships with the triumphs, jumped out to a 12-1 third inning lead in the opener and iced its victory with a seven run fourth inning outburst, as junior Kristyn Carroll (Brockton, Mass.) went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs for Westfield State, which received two hits and a pair of RBI from Brennan as well as a pair of safeties each from freshman Darcy Fortune (Palmer, Mass.) and Angela Paterson (Nantucket, Mass.) in support of sophomore Madeline Tomich (Alford, Mass.), who allowed a first inning single and fanned nine to improve to 14-2 inside the circle.  Sophomore Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.) collected that lone safety while suffering the setback on the mound for the host Buccaneers (2-24, 0-14 MASCAC), as she allowed just six earned runs and recorded a strikeout for Massachusetts Maritime, which plated its lone run on a wild pitch.

Brennan laced a three-run triple in the nightcap triumph for Westfield State, which used a pair of seven run rallies in the third and fourth frames to complete the sweep.  Sophomore Kerin DeGirolamo (North Attleboro, Mass.) added two hits and two RBI for the Owls, who also received two hits each from Carroll, senior Danielle Lutenegger (Sunderland, Mass.), junior Alicia Gardner (Athol, Mass.) and sophomore Lisa Policelli (Tewksbury, Mass.) as well as two RBI off the bat of junior Cassy Jouannet (Conway, Mass.).  Sophomore Ashtyn Welcome (Northfield, Mass.) scattered three hits and allowed an unearned run to pick up her fifth win of the season for Westfield State while fanning five for the contest.  Sophomore Libby Buck (South Chatham, Mass.) and freshmen Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) and Rachel Johnson (South Chatham, Mass.) rapped out singles in the nightcap setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Buccaneers plated an unearned tally in the top of the fourth on a throwing error.

Westfield State closes out its regular season slate on Tuesday afternoon by heading to Danbury, Conn. to take on Western Connecticut in a non-league twinbill that begins at 4:00 p.m.
