BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Juniors Mallorie Blakney (Fairfield, Maine) and Alexandra Kriegel (Winslow, Maine) each had four hits and combined for seven RBI to lead Thomas to a sweep of a non-league college softball doubleheader of Massachusetts Maritime by scores of 14-0 in the opener and 17-4 in the nightcap in games played at Allison Rollins Field.

The visiting Terriers (4-5) used a pair of six-run frames to take control in the opener, as Blakney recorded a pair of hits and two RBI while freshman Anika Powers (Stonington, Maine) added a pair of run-scoring singles to register four RBI in the triumph.  Junior Kaymala Eells (Otisfield, Maine) rapped out a pair of hits as well for the winners, while freshman Kelsey Crowe (Gorham, Maine) went the distance inside the circle for Thomas in scattering a pair of hits and striking out 10 to record the victory, as she helped her own cause with a pair of RBI.

Freshmen Meghan Thibeault (Scituate, Mass.) and Stephanie Saulenas (Tolland, Mass.) accounted for both of the hits for the host Buccaneers (2-2) in the opening game setback, as fellow freshman Janelle Beaulieu (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) fanned four in allowing just seven earned runs in going the distance.

Eells’ bases-clearing double in the first inning of the nightcap staked Thomas to an early 4-0 lead, but Massachusetts Maritime responded with three tallies in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Thibeault and a pair of run-scoring groundouts by senior Jess O’Meara (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Holly McLaughlin (Belmont, Mass.) to cut its deficit to one.  The Terriers took control of the contest with nine runs over the next two innings, keyed by RBI doubles off the bats of Blakney, Kriegel and freshman Samantha Moore (Etna, Maine), and the visitors added three more runs in the fourth to take a 16-3 lead, highlighted by a two-run single by junior Sarah Estes (Brewer, Maine).  The two teams traded runs in the final frame, as Thomas scored on an RBI groundout by freshman Molly Woodward (Burlington, Maine) and the Buccaneers received an RBI single from McLaughlin to account for the final score.

Kriegel’s three hits paced a 14-hit attack in the nightcap triumph for Thomas, which also received two hits each from Blakney, Estes, Moore and freshman Alexandra Kennedy (Readfield, Maine).  Sophomore Sara Pavento (Glenburn, Maine) allowed one earned run in going the distance inside the circle for the Terriers, as she struck out four along the way to pick up the win.  McLaughlin finished with two RBI as part of a six-hit attack in the second game setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as Beaulieu suffered the complete-game setback for the Buccaneers.

Massachusetts Maritime will be idle until Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers travel to Boston to take on UMass Boston in a non-league doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m., while Thomas will be idle until Friday, April 2nd when the Terriers travel to Orono, Maine to take on Maine-Presque Isle in a non-league doubleheader that begins at 4:00 p.m.
