New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Tournament

Rhode Island Yacht Club, Providence, R.I.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --  The Massachusetts Maritime dinghy sailing team took top honors at the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Tournament over the weekend at the Rhode Island Yacht Club, as the Buccaneers bested eight other squads in claiming the title.

Massachusetts Maritime’s “A” tandem was comprised of junior Frank Reeg (Spring Lake, Mich.) as well as freshmen Sydney Clays (Westerly, R.I.) and Thomas Dunn (Newport, R.I.), while the Buccaneer “B” vessel consisted of senior Sergio Gratta (Sarasota, Fla.) and freshman Christos Karplus (Falmouth, Mass.).  Favorable conditions on Saturday enabled Massachusetts Maritime to take control of the competition, as both squads combined to win 11 races overall and post a team score of 23 points.  Middlebury edged Bates (59-60) for the runner-up position, as Fairfield, UMass, Wesleyan, Bentley, UConn and Providence rounded out the field.

Both the Buccaneer dinghy and offshore teams wrap up their fall slates next weekend, as the dinghy squad will compete at the Salve Regina Sister Esther Open while Massachusetts Maritime’s offshore contingent returns to Annapolis, Md. seeking the school’s second intercollegiate national championship at the Navy John F. Kennedy Cup Regatta.
