CASTINE, Maine --  The Massachusetts Maritime dinghy sailing team began its fall schedule by recording a pair of top 10 performances in competition at the Penobscot Bay Open and Phil Harman Cup hosted by Maine Maritime over the weekend.

The Buccaneers finished 10th of 15 teams at the Penobscot Bay Open, as the duo of junior Frank Reeg (Spring Lake, Mich.) and sophomore Megan Laurie (North Weymouth, Mass.) sailed in the “A” vessel while the tandem of senior Sergio Gratta (Sarasota, Fla.) and sophomore Alex Bowen (North Kingstown, R.I.) comprised the “B” boat crew.  The two squads posted several top five finishes over the course of the weekend, with Reeg and Laurie winning one of their Saturday races in stellar conditions.  Massachusetts Maritime topped the host Mariners by eight points in the final team standings, as the Buccaneers also bested Vermont, MIT, UMass and Bates in an event won by Brown.

Steady breezes greeted competitors on both days of the Harman Cup on East Penobscot Bay, as challenging conditions moved into the region on Saturday but lessened Sunday.  Juniors Matthew Schaefer (Stratford, Conn.), Braden Foster (Trumbull, Conn.) and Bogdan Shcherbyna (Ashland, Mass.), along with freshman Andrew Morrison (Wakefield, R.I.), recorded consistent performances throughout the event and posted an eighth place finish overall, as Brown bested Northeastern and Bowdoin by two points to capture the team title.

The Buccaneers will head to Burlington, Vt. this weekend to compete at the Vermont Ross Trophy on Lake Champlain beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
