Reeg, Clays Lead Sailing to New England Championships

GREAT HERRING POND, Mass. – Frank Reeg and Sydney Clays took first place overall in the New England Dinghy Tournament and Alex Bowen and Meghan Laurie took first place in the B Division as Massachusetts Maritime Academy won the meet and qualified for the New England Dinghy Championships.

Middlebury College took an early lead in both divisions through two races, but Reeg and Clays improved with every attempt and won their last four matchups to finish with only 20 points. After dropping the first round, Bowen and Laurie won two through eight before settling for a very close second at 22 points.

The combined total for the Buccaneers was better than all but one single division total for the other five teams. Middlebury settled for second at 92 combined, while Bentley University's Division A squad had an impressive 35 points, but finished eight behind Middlebury after their Bs managed only a 65.

Rounding out the rest of the field on a day with light winds was The Landing School (a trade school in Arundel, Maine) at 137, UMass-Dartmouth at 185, and Providence College at 260.

The Sailing squad will have two weeks to prepare for the Reed Women's Trophy at the Coast Guard Academy next weekend, while it will also compete at the Morris Regatta on the Saturday.
