Buccaneer Sailing Standout Reeg Captures National Championship At 2016 MC Scow National Regatta

Massachusetts Maritime sophomore Frank Reeg certainly has a great story to tell about what he did on his summer vacation, as the Buccaneer sailing standout captured the national championship of the 2016 MC Scow National Regatta hosted by the Crystal Lake Yacht Club in Frankfort, Mich. this past weekend.

Reeg, a native of Spring Lake, Mich. and a graduate of Spring Lake High School, took top individual honors in a field of 101 competitors over the three-day event on Crystal Lake, as his score of 30 points bested runner-up Cam McNeil by 13 points.  After opening with a third place finish on Thursday, Frank was the first to cross the line in two of the next three races before adding a fifth place performance on Friday as part of the seven-race aggregate final score.

Conditions were light during the first two days of the championship, which saw individuals race in MC Scow vessels that are 16 feet in length, cat-rigged and designed to be sailed in by one or two people.  The final day of competition saw the weather change dramatically, with rain and stronger winds enveloping the lake for the last race.  Reeg battled through those elements nicely to post an eighth place performance and cop his national crown.

Frank will join his Massachusetts Maritime teammates for the Fall 2016 season-opening competition during the weekend of September 10th and 11th at the Maine Maritime Penobscot Bay Open.
