ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team closed out its fall schedule with a solid ninth place finish over the weekend at the prestigious Navy John F. Kennedy Cup Regatta on the waters of Chesapeake Bay, as the event is considered the national championship of the sport.

Westerly winds prevailed over the entrants at the start of the event, as seniors Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.), George Luber (North Redington Beach, Fla.), Christopher Mannka (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Emily Casella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), along with sophomores Matthew Schaefer (Stratford, Conn.), Evan Bowen (North Kingstown, R.I.) and McKenna Jarvis (Dedham, Mass.), served as the Buccaneer crew for the competition.  The winds shifted south and built in for most of the remaining races, as South Florida took top honors in the final team standings in topping runner-up Navy and third place College of Charleston.

Massachusetts Maritime topped SUNY-Maritime in the competition, which also included squads from California Maritime, Coast Guard, Michigan, Army and Merchant Marine.
