MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME DINGHY SAILING

Saturday – Sunday, April 23-24, 2016

Bridgeport, Conn./Boston, Mass./Bourne, Mass.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn./BOSTON, Mass./BOURNE, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime dinghy sailing team completed a busy and successful slate of competition in three different events over the weekend, as the Buccaneers were in action at the Sacred Heart Priddy Trophy and the Boston University Morris Trophy Regattas while also hosting the O’Toole Trophy Regatta on Sunday afternoon at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center.

Freshmen Frank Reeg (Spring Lake, Mich.) and Matthew Schaefer (Stratford, Conn.) were the busiest Buccaneers on the weekend, as the duo finished as the runner-up to Tufts in highly competitive races at the Priddy Trophy Regatta on Long Island Sound.  Strong and shifty winds of up to 20 knots provided challenges for the tandem, who posted 12 first place performances overall and topped third place Rhode Island in the final team standings.

Light and variable winds were in order throughout competition at the Morris Trophy Regatta, as Massachusetts Maritime was represented in the “A” boat by sophomores Jeffrey Adam (Newport, R.I.) and Sergio Gratta (Sarasota, Fla.) and in the “B” vessel by juniors George Luber (North Redington Beach, Fla.) and Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.).  The Buccaneers overcame those wind conditions to record a solid 10th place finish in the 18-team competition, which saw Tufts top Boston College and Brown for the top spot in the final standings.

Reeg and Schaefer completed their busy weekend on Sunday by sailing in the Massachusetts Maritime “A” boat on Great Herring Pond in the O’Toole Trophy Regatta, while the freshmen duo of Braden Foster (Trumbull, Conn.) and Evan Bowen (North Kingstown, R.I.) comprised the “B” vessel crew.  Favorable conditions led to impressive performances for the Buccaneers, who finished fourth of 14 teams in the event that was won by Boston University.

Massachusetts Maritime will compete at the New England Dinghy Championships next weekend after qualifying for the event for the first time in a decade earlier this spring.
