Offshore Sailing Enjoys Historic Weekend Of Competition At Storm Trysail Regatta

LARCHMONT, N.Y./BRUNSWICK, Maine-- Historic performances by the Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team highlighted competition over the weekend at the prestigious Storm Trysail Regatta that took place on Long Island Sound.
The Buccaneers sailed an all-female crew aboard “Morning Glory”, as senior Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.), sophomore Emily Casella (Liitle Egg Harbor, N.J.), freshmen Paige Mentuck (Swampscott, Mass.), Erica Mutoh (Palmetto Bay, Fla.) and Monica Chilcot (Plymouth, Mass.), along with Leah Saunders and Jamie Collins, became the first all-women’s crew to compete in the event’s history. Massachusetts Maritime finished eighth in the 12-boat fleet competition with several solid performances in races throughout the weekend.
Senior Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) skippered “Storm” in the hotly contested Design Class, as the vessel is owned by Academy graduate Rick Lyall ’79. McLaughlin, who teamed up with senior Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), junior Karl Ryder (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomores George Luber (North Reddington Beach, Fla.), Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.) and David Rodriguez (Wellfleet, Mass.) to top the College of Charleston in the competition.
The crew of the “Vamp” finished third in competition to Michigan and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, as seniors Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.) and Chris Wagner (Middleton, Mass.), juniors Judson Yerkes (West Barnstable, Mass.), James Lamb (Taunton, Mass.), Tor Johannessen (Amesbury, Mass.) and Brandon Deal (Norton, Mass.), along with sophomores Mariah Allen (Rochester, Mass.) and Christopher Mannka (Uxbridge, Mass.) bested Coast Guard and SUNY-Maritime in the event.
The Massachusetts Maritime dinghy sailing team several top five finishes in races at the Bowdoin Nicholas Barnett Trophy, as the Buccaneer “A” boat was comprised of freshmen Jeffrey Adam (Newport, R.I.) and Alexander Calderwood (Brewster, Mass.) while the “B” entry tandem was comprised of sophomores Matthew Woodward (Middleboro, Mass.) and Evan Sampou (West Newbury, Mass.). Massachusetts Maritime finished 12th in the final team standings for the competition.
Massachusetts Maritime will host the Great Herring Pond Invitational at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center next weekend beginning at 9:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
