Offshore Sailing Finishes Fifth At Navy MacMillan Cup, Qualifies For Kennedy Cup Regatta In November

ANNAPOLIS, Md./CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team qualified for the 2014 Kennedy Cup Regatta, which is considered the national championship of collegiate offshore sailing, by virtue of a fifth place finish at the prestigious Navy MacMillan Cup over the weekend.

 

Seniors Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.), Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.) and Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.), juniors James Lamb (Taunton, Mass.) and Robert Queisser (Carmel, Ind.), along with sophomores Kyle Brego (St. John, Virgin Islands) and Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.), comprised the Buccaneer crew for the event, as Massachusetts Maritime recorded a pair of top seven finishes in Saturday’s action before adding runner-up and third place performances on Sunday.  The Buccaneers will return to Annapolis during the weekend of November 7-9 for the Kennedy Cup in search of their second title in the event.  Additionally, junior Ryan Davis (North Falmouth, Mass.), sophomores Christopher Mannka (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Evan Sampou (West Newbury, Mass.), along with Leah Saunders, recorded several top 10 performances during competition in the Third Annual Keelboat Regatta that was also hosted by the United States Naval Academy.

 

The Massachusetts Maritime dinghy sailing team was in action at a pair of events as well over the weekend, as the tandem of freshmen Sergio Gratta (Sarasota, Fla.) and Erica Mutoh (Palmetto Bay, Fla.) placed sixth at the Roger Williams Southern Series Six.  The Buccaneers also competed at the Northeastern Oberg Trophy, as the crew consisting of sophomores Mariah Allen (Rochester, Mass.) and Matthew Woodward (Middleboro, Mass.) as well as freshmen Paige Mentuck (Swampscott, Mass.) and Monica Chilcot (Plymouth, Mass.) combined to record an overall 18th place finish while sailing in three different divisions overall.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will be in action next weekend at the Nickerson Trophy.
