Ideal Conditions Lead To Successful Weekend For Offshore, Dinghy Sailing Squads

Last Chance Regatta/Commonwealth Invitational/UNH Chris Loder Trophy

BOURNE, Mass./DURHAM, N.H.--  Both the Massachusetts Maritime offshore and dinghy sailing teams took advantage of ideal conditions on the water to post solid performances in their respective competition at the Last Chance Regatta and the New Hampshire Chris Loder Trophy while hosting the Commonwealth Invitational at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center on Herring Pond.

 

An all-women’s crew took top honors in the offshore squad’s efforts at the Low Tide Yacht Club’s Last Chance Regatta, as “Good Trade” was comprised of senior Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.), sophomores Mariah Allen (Rochester, Mass.) and Emily Casella (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), freshmen Monica Chilcot (Plymouth, Mass.) and Erica Mutoh (Palmetto Bay, Fla.) as well as Leah Saunders and Ashlyn Witts.  The crew of “Their Turn” placed second and was comprised of seniors Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.) and Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), junior Brandon Deal (Norton, Mass.), sophomore Patrick Goldsmith (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman Samuel Estes (Carver, Mass.), while the “Buffalo”, comprised of senior Chris Wagner (Middleton, Mass.), juniors Robert Quiesser (Carmel, Ind.) and Timothy Forgione (Kendall Park, N.J.), sophomore Joseph Dragon (Glen Arm, Md.) and freshmen Cassandra Kolstad (Madison, Conn.) and Andrew Walz (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished third in the competition.

 

The Buccaneer dinghy team hosted the Commonwealth Invitational, as Massachusetts Maritime’s two entries placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 10-team field.  The “B” boat consisting of junior Karl Ryder (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), sophomore George Luber (North Reddington Beach, Fla.) and freshmen Scott Ledoux (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Gregory Hollstein (Raynham, Mass.) posted a score of 87 points, while the “A” boat consisting of freshmen Jeffrey Adam (Newport, R.I.), Alexander Calderwood (Brewster, Mass.), Paige Mentuck (Swampscott, Mass.) and Jamie Hayes (Stonington, Conn.) finished with a score of 89 points.  Tufts took top honors in the event with a score of 49 points, while Boston University (75) and Northeastern (77) finished in the respective runner-up and third place spots.

 

Conditions weren’t as ideal farther north at the New Hampshire Chris Loder Trophy in Durham, N.H., as Massachusetts Maritime’s two entries combined to place 11th overall in the event.  Senior Sean McLaughlin (Fairhaven, Mass.) and sophomore Evan Sampou (West Newbury, Mass.) comprised the Buccaneer “A” boat, while sophomores Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.) and David Rodriguez (Wellfleet, Mass.) were in the “B” entry.

 

Massachusetts Maritime will compete next weekend at the Navy Intrepid Trophy, Rhode Island Gardiner Island Invitational, Dartmouth Hewitt Trophy, Salve Regina Women’s Olympians and the Boston College Women’s Singlehanded Regattas.
