LOS ANGELES, Calif. --  The Massachusetts Maritime offshore sailing team began its spring schedule with an impressive performance over the weekend at the prestigious Cal Maritime Los Angeles Harbor Cup, as the Buccaneers finished fifth in the 10-team field while besting rivals Maine Maritime, Coast Guard and SUNY-Maritime in the competition.

Seniors Andrew Morgan (Jupiter, Fla.), Priscilla Stoll (Pocasset, Mass.), Charles Cahill (Duxbury, Mass.) and Matthew Ferlotti (Fairfax, Va.), along with junior James Lamb (Taunton, Mass.), sophomores Ryan Novak-Smith (Johnston, R.I.) and Kyle Brego (St. John, Virgin Islands) as well as freshman Erica Mutoh (Palmetto Bay, Fla.), comprised Massachusetts Maritime’s crew for the event, as the Buccaneers won the last race of the regatta on Sunday afternoon to break a fifth place tie with Long Beach State.

Host Cal Maritime took top honors in the competition, while the College of Charleston, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Southern California finished in the respective second, third and fourth place positions.  Massachusetts Maritime topped Long Beach State, Maine Maritime, the University of California, Coast Guard and SUNY-Maritime with its fifth place performance.

The Buccaneers will be in action over the next two weekends in offshore competition at the Safety at Sea Seminar on March 21-22 and at the J-70 Sloop Regatta on March 27-28.
