Plumb, Galvin Lead Men's Cross Country To Fifth Place Finish At 2017 MASCAC Championships

WESTFIELD, Mass. --  The Massachusetts Maritime men’s cross country team posted a fifth place finish at the 2017 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon, while the Buccaneer women’s squad recorded a seventh place final team standing in the event that was hosted by Westfield State at Stanley Park.

 

Sophomore Daniel Plumb (Hopkinton, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for Massachusetts Maritime by recording a 25th place time of 28;12.75 over the 8K layout in a field of 102 runners, while senior Robby Galvin (Woburn, Mass.) was right behind in 26th place with a time of 28:17.29.  Senior Chris MacKay (Bethany, Conn.) was next in 54th place with a time of 29:53.04, while sophomore Kyle Hansen (North Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshman Zach Ferreira (Stoughton, Mass.) rounded out the Buccaneer scoring with respective 59th and 68th place times of 30:16.86 and 31:03.43.  Fitchburg State captured the team title by topping runner-up Bridgewater State by four points (30-34), while Westfield State was third with a total of 83 points.

 

Senior Kaylene Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) was the top performer on the women’s side for Massachusetts Maritime, as she covered the 6K layout in a time of 25:04.21 to finish 60th overall.  Freshman Michelle Campbell (Weymouth, Mass.) was next in 72nd place with a time of 28:37.75 for the Buccaneers, who received respective 76th and 77th place finishes from sophomore Kayla Pieroni (Arlington, Mass.) and freshman Heather Ward (Plymouth, Mass.) in times of 34:06.19 and 44:03.00.  Worcester State claimed the team championship by topping runner-up Westfield State by seven points (34-41), while Bridgewater State was third with a score of 82 points.

 

The Massachusetts Maritime men’s squad wraps up its 2017 slate in two weeks at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships on Saturday, November 11th at Southern Maine beginning at 11:00 a.m., while today’s race was the season finale for the Buccaneer women.
