Men’s Soccer Drops Non-Conference Match-up with Brandeis

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – Tuesday night against Brandeis University was the first of two games this week for men's soccer and their penultimate non-conference game of the season. A game that ended 8-0 in 2018 in Waltham ended 3-0 by the Bay on Tuesday.

Final: Judges 3, Buccaneers 0

Records: Mass Maritime 2-9-3 (0-3-1 MASCAC)

                Brandeis 7-2-4 (1-0-1 UAA)

For The Bucs

  • Maritime took a total of four shots in the game with one on target coming off the foot of freshman Logan Troy (Sutton, Mass).
  • Starting goalkeeper Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass) allowed all three goals and made two saves on five shots faced. Sophomore John Hardy (Braintree, Mass) came in and played the second half. He made two saves on two shots faced.
  • The Maritime defense held the Judges to just seven shots on target in the game.

For The Judges

  • Freshman Noah Gans (Newton, Mass) scored two goals in the game on his only two shots on target.
  • The third goal for the Judges was credited as an own goal against Maritime.
  • Senior goalkeeper Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J.) did not face a shot in the victory. In relief of Irwin was Aiden Guthro (Newburyport, Mass) to begin the second half. Following Guthro in to the game, sophomore Max Blacker (Scotch Plains, N.J.) played the final 19 minutes. Blacker faced the lone Buc shot of the night, making the save.

How It Happened

Brandeis scored all three of their goals in the first half. The first came on a free kick at the start of the 11th minute. Ganz set up left of goal, 25 yard out and rolled one past the wall and passed Hardy to put the Judges up 1-0. Just under six minutes later, Gans scored again, this time off of a rebound that fell to his right foot for an open shot which he took advantage of, beating Hardy to his left to put his team up 2-0. In the 39th minute, the Judges extended their lead to what would be the final, 3-0. Going down in the book as an own goal, sophomore Sammy Guttell (Brookline, Mass) took a shot on goal and, attempting to clear the ball over his own net, Maritime midfielder AJ Bubencik (Foxboro, Mass) unfortunately put the ball in to the back of the net for the own goal.

The second half was full of a lot of defense by both sides and a lot of running clock. With neither team able to capitalize on their chances the score remained 3-0 in favor of Brandeis at the end of 90 minutes.
