Team Thomas Recruits Maritime Men’s Soccer For MitoAction 5k

BOSTON, Mass – This past weekend, Maritime head men's soccer coach Greg Perry, current members of the Buccaneer men's soccer team and alumni walked and ran alongside TeamIMPACT team member Thomas Schmid in the MitoAction 5k in Boston.

The MitoAction 5k takes place every September to raise funds and awareness for mitochondrial disease, which causes debilitating physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities. The disease is progressive and has no cure and affects nearly 4,000 people.

On May 14th, 2014, with the help of TeamIMPACT, a national non-profit that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes, Thomas became a member of the Buccaneer men's soccer team. Over the last six years, now 14, Thomas hasn't just become a part of the Buccaneers, the Buccaneers have become a part of Team Thomas.

Thomas attends every men's soccer game he can, even making the long trek from the family's home on the South Shore to western Massachusetts to North Adams to watch the team play MCLA. Thomas' loyalty and dedication to the Buccaneers is shared by the dedication of the men's soccer team as they attend the MitoAction 5k each year with the Schmid family.

This year, Team Thomas was 120 members strong. The team consisted of Thomas' family and friends as well as current Bucs and a handful of Buccaneer alumni. The MitoAction 5k takes place every year at the beginning of Mitochondrial Disease Awareness week. To learn more about the diseaseand MitoAction please visit http://www.mitoaction.org/.

Later this season, on October 1st, Thomas is scheduled to coach a team of Special Olympics Unified Athletes against Coach Perry's Buccaneers at 6pm at Clean Harbors Stadium. If you see Thomas in the stands at one of our men's soccer games, we encourage you to say hello and introduce yourself to this incredible young man.
