Bucs Bag First Win in Comeback Fashion on Back of Two Wayrynen Goals

CASTINE, Maine – Saturday evening, the Buccaneers faced off against SUNY Maritime in their final game of the Maritime Cup. Coming off of a tough 4-3 loss Friday night, the Bucs mounded a comeback win of their own, winning their first game of 2019, 2-1, over the Privateers in Maine.

Buccaneer senior Andrew Wayrynen (Rockport, Mass) scored two goals in Saturday's game. His two goals were the only two shots the Bucs had on target in the game. With three goals, Wayrynen leads the Bucs in goals scored in four games. Goalkeeper Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass) started the game in goal. He allowed the lone Privateer goal on one shot on target. In the second half, John Murphy (Braintree, Mass) took over between the sticks. He went on to make four saves and pick up the victory.

SUNY took nine total shots, five of which were on target. James Roland scored the only goal for the Privateers, unassisted. Goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez dropped to 3-1 on the season in goal allowing the two Buc goals.

In the first half, Roland opened the scoring in the 15th minute to give his team an early 1-0 lead. Wayrynen answered for the Buccaneers in the 27th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The teams took that score to the halftime break.

In the second 45 minutes, neither team could break the 1-1 tie in the first 40 minutes of the half. Being outshot 9-3 in the half, Wayrynen recorded the fourth shot of the half, sixth shot over all, and only the second shot on target by the Bucs in the game. It was a shot that found the back of the net to give Mass Maritime a 2-1 advantage in the 89th minute. The Bucs went on to take the 2-1 win, improving to 1-2-1 on the season.
