Buccaneers Edged In Men's Soccer By Nichols

DUDLEY, Mass. - Seven minutes before the end of the opening half Wednesday night Nichols College junior striker Jacob Sargent (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) got the ball past Massachusetts Maritime keeper Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) giving the Bison's the lead, one they would hold onto for the rest of the way for a 1-0 victory.

Massachusetts Maritime outshot Nichols 17-14, with a dozen shots in the second half, but could not catch the Bison's. Hardy finished the night with five saves.

The Buccaneers had scoring chances in the first half. Andrew Crawford (Kingston, Mass./Silver Lake) challenged Nichols keeper Patrick Porpora (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) in the seventh minute and Brendan Gawron (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) had a shot blocked on a rebound. Andrew Wayrynen (Rockport, Mass./Rockport) had a ball sail wide and Jacob Crawford (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) went after Porpora with nine minutes left in the half, but was blocked.

The Buccaneers put pressure on the Bison defense in the second half. Gawron was high with a header and Justin Burns (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) had a shot blocked midway through the second. Down the stretch Ben Paine (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) and Wayrynen had shots blocked. Gawron went after Porpora and was denied. Zach O'Neil (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) had a shot blocked in the final two minutes and Gawron knocked a header in Porpora"s direction in the final minute only to have it sail high.

Massachusetts Maritime (1-2-1) host Fitchburg State on Saturday for homecoming beginning at 10 AM. Nichols College (4-1) will host Roger Williams Saturday.
