Maritime Fights Newbury College To 3-3 Tie In 2OT
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. In a hard-fought battle on a hot night the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers and the Newbury Nighthawks fought through double overtime to finish in a 3-3 tie.
The Buccaneers had a clear advantage in shots finishing with a 35-13 advantage and outshot the Nighthawks 5-0 in double overtime. Andrew Wayrynen (Rockport, Mass./Rockport) went after the Nighthawk net with a pair of shots in the first OT, while the Bucs combined for three shots in the second 10 minute OT.
Newbury was first on the scoreboard when Julio Arreola (San Diego, CA./Chula Vista) fired a ball from 30 yards that deflected off a Buccaneer defender and into the MMA net giving the Nighthawks a one-goal lead. With under two minutes to play in the opening half, Newbury pulled out to a two-goal advantage when Warren Exceus (Boston, Mass./Tech Boston Academy) got one past Massachusetts Maritime Academy keeper Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass./Groton-Dunstable).
The Buccaneers cut into the lead before the break when with 1:14 to play Brady Lemmon (California, MD./St. Mary's Ryken) took a pass from Shane MacNeil (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) and put it into the Nighthawk net.
Eight minutes into the second half the Buccaneers landed the equalizer as Lemmon intercept a pass 20-yards in front of the Newbury net and found Ben Cook (Ft.Myers, Fla./Ft Myers) closing fast. Sliding the ball forward, Lemmon hit Cook on the run and the sophomore striker hit the back of the net.
Newbury edged ahead in the 71st minute on an unassisted effort by Albert Baraka (Congo Bukavu,DR./Worcester North). The Buccaneers came back to tie the match in the 78th minute when AJ Bubencik (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) crossed a ball to Stephen Froio (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) from right to left that Froio tucked past Newbury keeper Jarrod Smith (Watertown, Mass./Immaculate Heart).
Smith finished the night with a dozen saves for the Nighthawks, while Hardy stopped five Newbury shots.
The Buccaneers (1-0-1) host Dean College on Wednesday at 7 PM, while Newbury (0-1-1) travels to face Emmanuel College at 7 PM.
