WORCESTER, Mass. --  Junior Hieu Nguyen’s (Weymouth, Mass.) goal in the 18th minute of play evened matters and enabled Massachusetts Maritime to forge a 1-1 double overtime draw with Worcester State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer match played Saturday morning at Coughlin Field.

Nguyen converted a feed from senior Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) on the tying tally (his fourth of the season) for the visiting Buccaneers (6-3-2, 1-2-1 MASCAC), as junior Alex Wolfel (Unionville, Conn.) had given the host Lancers (1-7-2, 0-2-2 MASCAC) a one-goal advantage just 2:34 into action on an assist from fellow junior Brendan Whitson (Auburn, Mass.).  Massachusetts Maritime held a 14-9 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes of play, and after the two squads each had five shots in the second half, Worcester State held a 6-2 advantage in the two extra sessions, though the Buccaneers had a 2-1 edge in shots on goal in the two overtime periods.

Senior Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made six stops in the draw for Massachusetts Maritime, while freshman Nick Zucco (Ludlow, Mass.) made five saves in net for Worcester State as the Buccaneers outshot the Lancers by a 21-20 margin for the contest while the hosts held a 6-4 edge in corners.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Worcester State travels to Chicopee, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Elms in a non-league match that begins at 4:00 p.m.
