BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Sophomore Douglas Silviera’s (Revere, Mass.) goal with just under 17 minutes remaining proved to be the game-winner and lifted UMass Boston to a 2-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Silviera converted a feed from freshman Dylan Voss (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and lofted a shot from 20 yards out into the back right corner of the net on the deciding tally for the visiting Beacons (5-9-2), who took a 1-0 advantage at the break on a breakaway marker off the foot of sophomore Lucas Ordosgoitia (Cartagena, Colombia) that was set up by Silviera and senior Brian Sanz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil).  Senior Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) evened matters for the host Buccaneers (6-8-2) in the 58th minute of play when he blasted a feed from freshman Connor McInnis (Duxbury, Mass.) in the upper right corner for his third goal of the season, setting up Silviera’s heroics.  Massachusetts Maritime had a chance to force an extra session in the closing minute of play, as a shot from senior Adam Vieira (New Bedford, Mass.) went just wide of the net with 14 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Bryce Menard (Randolph, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Boston with nine saves, including five in the second half, while senior Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made eight stops (five after intermission) in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Buccaneers outshot the Beacons by an 18-12 margin and held a 6-2 edge in corners for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime, which currently holds the sixth and final spot in the upcoming conference championships, hosts Framingham State in a key Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match to close out its regular season schedule on Friday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center beginning at 6:00 p.m., while UMass Boston closes out its regular season slate Saturday afternoon by heading to Plymouth, N.H. to take on Plymouth State in a Little East Conference match that begins at 1:00 p.m.
