FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Senior Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass.) netted a pair of goals as Fitchburg State held off a second half rally to post a 3-2 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Elliot Field.
Ventura collected both of his markers in the opening 10:08 of action for the host Falcons (2-9-1, 1-3 MASCAC), as he converted passes from junior Jason Pereira (Wilmington, Mass.) on the match’s opening goal in the sixth minute and from senior Kevin Mascary (North Easton, Mass.) in the 11th minute of play. Senior Danny Bolam (East Fairfield, Vt.) netted what proved to be the game-winner in the 36th minute on a feed from senior Brian Bettencourt (Norton, Mass.) for a 3-0 Fitchburg State advantage at the break, as the visiting Buccaneers (1-8, 1-3 MASCAC) stormed back with a pair of goals that came just 3:29 apart early in the second half from seniors Mike McCarthy (Norwell, Mass.) and Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.), the latter coming on a penalty kick conversion in the 55th minute of play. Massachusetts Maritime registered 15 shots over the final 45 minutes of action but couldn’t net the equalizer, including a defensive save with 10 minutes remaining off a shot from freshman Rob Robbs (Braintree, Mass.).
Freshman Aidan Hanratty (East Bridgewater, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Fitchburg State with an eight-save effort, while junior Patrick Slaney (Northbridge, Mass.) made four first half saves in suffering the setback in net for Massachusetts Maritime, as sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) was not called upon to make a second half stop. The Buccaneers outshot the Falcons by an overall margin of 25-12 for the contest while holding a 9-1 edge in corners.
Massachusetts Maritime travels to North Dartmouth, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on UMass Dartmouth in a non-league match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State heads to Nashua, N.H. on Wednesday evening to square off with Rivier in a non-league outing that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
