BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Brett Godiksen’s (Westbrook, Conn.) goal in the 13th minute of play lifted Coast Guard to a 1-0 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime in the season opener for both schools Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Godiksen converted a feed from fellow senior Kevin Noll (Clearwater Beach, Fla.) on the lone tally for the visiting Bears (1-0), and junior Will Leffler (Daytona Beach, Fla.) made that margin stand up in goal for Coast Guard, as he registered four saves, including a point-blank stop with 12 seconds remaining, to preserve the shutout triumph.
Sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made six saves in the setback for the host Buccaneers (0-1), including a pair of point blank stops on Godiksen in the final 22-plus minutes of play, as the Bears outshot Massachusetts Maritime by a 9-6 margin for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime travels to Leicester, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Becker in a non-league match that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Coast Guard hosts Johnson & Wales in a non-league outing on Wednesday evening in New London, Conn. that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
