BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Junior Tim Parsons (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead Westfield State to a 2-1 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
After a scoreless first half of action, Parsons gave the visiting Owls (6-2, 1-1 MASCAC) a 1-0 advantage just 1:58 after intermission on a feed from fellow junior Josh Severns (Suffield, Conn.), and the duo hooked up for what would prove to be an important insurance tally in the 82nd minute, as sophomore Tim McDonough’s (Framingham, Mass.) marker with just over three minutes remaining on an assist from fellow sophomore Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) enabled the host Buccaneers (2-5, 0-2 MASCAC) to creep back to within one but get no closer.
Junior Jeff Pepoli (Ashburnham, Mass.) picked up his sixth win of the season in goal for Westfield State with a six-save effort, including three-point blank first half stops that kept the match scoreless, while freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made nine saves in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Owls outshot the Buccaneers by a 14-11 margin (including a 10-3 edge over the final 45 minutes of action) in a contest played in a very dense fog.
Massachusetts Maritime heads to New London, Conn. on Tuesday evening to take on Coast Guard in a non-league match that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Westfield State travels to New Haven, Conn. on Wednesday afternoon to square off with Albertus Magnus in a non-league outing that begins at 4:00 p.m.
