BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead WPI to a 3-1 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Ciampa evened matters for the visiting Engineers (5-7-1) in the ninth minute of play on a feed from junior Kevin Ducharme (Bedford, N.H.) after senior Kevin McCord (Norwell, Mass.) had given the host Buccaneers (5-10) an early 1-0 advantage just 6:26 into the match with his fifth marker of the season on an assist from junior Dennis Doherty (West Falmouth, Mass.).  Sophomore Jason Hopkins (Mendon, Mass.) provided what proved the be the game-winning tally (his second goal of the season) with just 16 seconds remaining in the opening 45 minutes of action for WPI, as his header off Ducharme’s second assist of the night staked the visitors to a 2-1 advantage at the break, and Ciampa provided an insurance goal (his eighth of the season) for the Engineers in the 62nd minute when he lofted a shot from 20 yards out on a feed from senior Keeon Tabrizi (Harvard, Mass.) to close out the scoring.

Senior Kirk Dragsbaek (Sherborn, Mass.) picked up his second win of the season in goal for WPI with a nine-save effort, while freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made four second half stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Engineers by a 19-15 margin for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match that begins at Noon, while WPI travels to Springfield, Mass. to square off with Springfield in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference outing that begins at 3:00 p.m.
