MEDFORD, Mass. --  Sophomore Derek Young (Falmouth, Mass.) and senior Kevin McCord (Norwell, Mass.) each netted goals to back the first collegiate shutout by freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) in net that propelled Massachusetts Maritime to a 2-0 non-league college men’s soccer victory over Tufts Tuesday evening at Bello Field.

Derek Young gave the visiting Buccaneers (2-4) the only tally they would need in the 34th minute of action when he sent a one-timer in off a crossing pass from junior Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, Mass.), and McCord provided an insurance marker for Massachusetts Maritime in the 76th minute when he converted a feed from junior Mike McCarthy (Norwell, Mass.) to seal the triumph.

Brett Young (Derek’s younger brother) took care of the rest in his fourth collegiate start for the Buccaneers, as he notched six saves on the evening, including a pair of second half breakaways, to even his mark at 2-2 on the season.  Junior Zach Cousens (Contoocook, N.H.) made three stops in goal in the setback for the host Jumbos (1-2-1), who outshot Massachusetts Maritime by an 18-11 margin and held a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks for the contest.

“Tonight was just our best all-around defensive effort of the year, and one of the best I’ve seen in my career,” Buccaneer Head Coach Greg Perry said after the match.  “Brett Young showed unbelievable poise as a freshman, and our backs and midfielders played cohesively throughout the game.  This was a great win for our program against one of the top teams in New England.”

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 6:00 p.m., while Tufts hosts Wesleyan in a New England Small College Athletic Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field at 2:30.
