NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Sophomore George Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) netted a pair of goals to lead MCLA to a 3-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Shewcraft Field.
Sullivan converted feeds from senior Luke Davis (Bedford, Mass.) and graduate student Israel Diaz (Yonkers, N.Y.) in the 14th minute to stake the host Trailblazers (5-4-1, 2-1 MASCAC) to an early 1-0 advantage, and sophomore Jake McCall (Lincoln, R.I.) extended that margin to 2-0 at the break by converting a pass from junior Chris Nobrega (Mattapoisett, Mass.) with 2:10 remaining in the opening 45 minutes of action. Sullivan’s second tally of the day, an unassisted marker with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest, accounted for the final score.
Senior Adam Tarsa (Adams, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for MCLA with an eight-save effort, including six stops in the second half alone, while freshman Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made three saves in the setback for the visiting Buccaneers (3-7, 0-3 MASCAC), who outshot the Trailblazers by a 21-10 margin for the match, including an 11-4 advantage over the final 45 minutes of play.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Newbury in a non-league outing on Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while MCLA will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Trailblazers host Framingham State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Shewcraft Field that begins at 1:00 p.m.
