BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Sophomore Kevin McCord (Norwell, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in a 3:17 span midway through the second half to snap a 1-1 tie and propel Massachusetts Maritime to a 3-1 non-league college men's soccer victory over Newbury Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The host Buccaneers (4-5-1) trailed by a goal at the break after sophomore Andi Maska (Roslindale, Mass.) converted a rebound of a header by freshman Alex Chappell (East Haddam, Conn.) that gave the visiting Nighthawks (1-9) an early 1-0 edge in the 28th minute, but sophomore Dennis Doherty (West Falmouth, Mass.) evened matters for Massachusetts Maritime in the 64th minute with his first goal of the season on a feed from junior Jon White (Lynnfield, Mass.). McCord gave the Buccaneers the lead for good in the 71st minute with his fourth tally of the season on a give-and-go from senior Matt McDonnell (Marshfield, Mass.), and he provided an insurance marker in the 75th minute off a corner kick from sophomore Josh Hoy (Camp Hill, Pa.) to close out the scoring.
Sophomore Taylor Wyman (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) picked up his first collegiate victory in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with a six-save effort, while sophomore William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) made 16 stops in net in the setback for Newbury as the Buccaneers outshot the Nighthawks by a 28-9 margin for the match, including a 17-2 advantage over the final 45 minutes.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts MCLA in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Newbury hosts UMass Boston in a non-league match on Thursday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass. that begins at 3:00 p.m.
