CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.-- Sophomore Matt Patten (Weymouth, Mass.) netted a goal and two assists for four points as Massachusetts Maritime extended its unbeaten string to two straight with a 3-2 non-league college men's soccer victory over Newbury Thursday afternoon at Pine Manor Field.
Patten gave the visiting Buccaneers (3-7-1), who have already passed their overall win total of last season, an early 1-0 advantage when he converted a feed from freshman Mike McCarthy (Norwell, Mass.) just 2:46 into the contest, but senior William Maddock (Marshfield, Mass.) evened matters for the host Nighthawks (2-9) just 1:27 later on assist from freshman Timothy Chatigny (Pelham, Mass.) for a 1-1 draw at the break. Freshman Kevin McCord (Norwell, Mass.) gave Massachusetts Maritime the lead for good in the 51st minute after converting a Patten feed, and sophomore Kyle Sheehan (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted what proved to be the game-winner for the Bucs in the 66th minute on Patten's second assist of the afternoon. Senior John Mawson (Amherst, Mass.) converted a Maddock pass in the 75th minute for Newbury's other marker of the day to close out the scoring for the contest.
Freshman Corey Cameron (Westfield, Mass.) picked up his second win in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with a five-save effort, while freshman William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) made three stops in net for Newbury as the Buccaneers outshot the Nighthawks by a 15-12 margin for the match.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Westfield State in a MASCAC outing on Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field beginning at 1:00 p.m., while Newbury heads to New London, Conn. on Saturday afternoon for a New England Collegiate Conference match with Mitchell that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
