BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.-- Senior Neil Carlson's (Kingston, Mass.) goal with 1:46 remaining in the second overtime lifted Massachusetts Maritime to a 4-3 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over Fitchburg State Saturday afternoon at Commander Ellis Field.

Carlson notched his first goal of the season on a scramble in front of the net for the host Buccaneers (5-9-2, 1-4 MASCAC), who extended their unbeaten streak to three straight with the triumph, as he raced in to convert a rebound of original shots off the feet of sophomore Kyle Sheehan (Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman Kevin McCord (Norwell, Mass.) on the game-winner.

McCord gave Massachusetts Maritime a 1-0 advantage just 10:09 into the match with his third score of the year on an assist from fellow freshman Josh Hoy (Camp Hill, Pa.), but the visiting Falcons (4-8-1, 0-4-1 MASCAC) evened matters in the 35th minute when senior Jeffrey Loven (Littleton, Mass.) converted a feed from sophomore Robbie Pacini (Stoneham, Mass.) for a 1-1 draw at the break. Sophomore Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass.) gave Fitchburg State a 2-1 advantage seven minutes after intermission on a pass from sophomore Joseph Daigle (Holyoke, Mass.), but McCord evened things for the Buccaneers just 4:55 later with his second of the day on assists from Hoy and freshman Sean Szczesny (Whitman, Mass.). Hoy gave the hosts a 3-2 lead in the 61st minute when he lofted a shot from 35 yards out on feeds from Szczesny and sophomore Rory O'Donnell (Somerset, Mass.), but the Falcons forged the third tie of the day in the 75th minute when freshman Trevor Higgins (Kittery Point, Maine) scored on a breakaway on a pass from sophomore Danny Angelosanto (Stoneham, Mass.), setting up Carlson's heroics in the second extra session.

Senior Tim Meighan (East Bridgewater, Mass.) picked up his third win of the season in goal for Massachusetts Maritime with an eight-save effort, while junior Matt Carey (Stratford, Conn.) made six stops in net for Fitchburg State as each team had 16 shots for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime, now a game out of a MASCAC playoff spot heading into the final two weeks of the season, will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Buccaneers head to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State in a key league outing that begins at Noon, while Fitchburg State hosts Eastern Connecticut in a non-league match on Wednesday evening in Fitchburg, Mass. beginning at 7:00 p.m.
