Men's Lacrosse Can't Hold off Lyons at Home

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- Tuesday evening, the Bucs men's lacrosse team faced a familiar foe in Wheaton College, a team they used to share a conference with. Wheaton took an early lead and though the Bucs got close at the end, the Lyons were able to keep the Buccaneers from coming all the way back and left Taylor's Point with a 9-7 win.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Cooper Barretled all scorers with three goals in the game. Braeden Kosiewicz and Joe Vricella each had two goals. 
  • Quinn MuchaJack Iversen, and Daniel Kane were all credited with one assist.
  • Seamus Buckley picked up a team-high five ground balls. Brian Rosher was close behind with four ground balls.
  • On the faceoff, Rosher won 10-of-20 faceoffs for the Bucs. 
  • Defensively, Buckley caused four turnovers and reigning LEC Defensive Player of the Week Chris Sullivan caused three.
  • In total, the Bucs picked up 36 ground balls, were successful on 21-of-26 clearances, won 10-of-20 faceoffs, scored one power play goal on three opportunities, and took 49 total shots in the game.

Wheaton

  • Mike McLaughlin scored three times to lead the Lyons and Mitch Tepedino scored twice. Four other Lyons netted one goal each.
  • Karter Noyes and Charlie Goodrich were the only Wheaton players to record an assist.
  • Pason Fielding picked up a game-high six ground balls. 
  • On the faceoff, Chris Bodnaruk went 10-for-19.
  • Defensively, Goodrich caused two turnovers to lead the Lyons.
  • In total, Wheaton picked up 28 ground balls, were successful on 21-of-29 clearance attempts, won 10-of-20 faceoffs, failed to score on any of their three power plays, and took 45 shots in total.

How It Happened

Wheaton scored first 45 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Vricella matched the Lyons goal at 13:39 to tie the game at 1-1. In the final 10:33 of the first, the Lyons scored three times, unanswered, to take a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second, there were only two goals scored, both by Wheaton. The first came at 14:08 and the second at 8:14. At the halftime break, Wheaton led Maritime 6-1. 

Vricella scored first in the third to make the score 6-2. Wheaton then went on to score two unanswered at 7:04 and 2:47, taking an 8-3 lead. Kosiewicz scored for the Bucs at 2:13 and Barret netted a goal with 52 seconds left and on a power play to close out the scoring in the third. Wheaton led the Bucs 8-4 after three.

Maritime outscored the Lyons in the fourth getting their first goal from Barret just a minute into the period. Up 8-5, McLaughlin scored one more time for Wheaton, getting the score line to 9-5. Both defenses held strong though the Bucs broke through scoring two more times. Barrett scored at 7:10 and Kosiewicz scored at 3:15 to get Maritime within two goals, 9-7. Wheaton sat back and parked the bus against an onslaught of Buccaneers attacks. Maritime coudn't break through any more and the Lyons left Buzzards Bay with a 9-7 win.

The Bucs travel to Maine on Saturday to take on Maine Maritime in the annual Admiral's Cup game against the Mariners at 12pm.
