Maritime Holds off Southern Maine Comeback, Pick up Road Win

GORHAM, Maine – The Buccaneers improved to 4-2 on the season this afternoon with a 13-11 win over future Little East Conference opponent, the Southern Maine Huskies.

Junior attacker Ben Avakian (Bourne, Mass) scored nine times and assisted on another goal for the Buccaneers in the win. The nine goals are a career high for the Bourne native. He has also scored three or more goals in the last five games. Four other players scored for the Bucs, captain Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass), Andrew Franks (North Falmouth, Mass), Trey Guerrini (Foxborough, Mass), and Spencer Jones (Hyannis, Mass). Jones also had an assist. Senior captain Kenneth Parnell (Marshfield, Mass) assisted on three goals, two that belonged to Avakian and Franks' lone score. Goalie Michael Dolan (McLean, Va) made 12 saves and allowed 11 goals on 23 shots faced.

Southern Maine's Tristan Dundas scored five times for the Huskies while also adding an assist. Six other Huskies scored in the loss, including Nick James who netted a goal and assisted on two others. Goalie Griffin Hanson made 14 saves and allowed the 13 Maritime goals on 27 shots on target.

Avakian opened the games scoring two minutes in and went off for a five goal scoring streak, unanswered by the Huskies, for the first eight minutes of the game. Dundas broke the Avakian scoring fest with 6:30 left in the first to bring the score to 5-1 in favor of the Bucs. Avakian opened the lead back to five shortly after the Dundas goal. Each team scored another goal before the end of the first, giving the Academy a 7-2 lead heading to the second.

The scoring slowed in the second after nine goals were scored in the first with only six scored between the teams before the half. The Bucs scored three times, two of which were from Avakian, the other from Jones. USM kept pace scoring three of their own. Maritime went to the half up 10-5 over the Huskies.

Defense took over for both teams after the break. The Bucs extended their lead to six goals, scoring twice and allowing just one Southern Maine score by Dundas.

The Huskies beared down and attempted a comeback in the fourth, scoring five times and only allowed one Buccaneer score. The effort was not enough as at the end of the 60 minutes, the Bucs still held a 13-11, two-goal lead and headed south with their fourth win of the season.

The Buccaneers are off until next Saturday when they will open NEWMAC play against Babson at 3pm on the road.
