Bagby Appointed As Massachusetts Maritime's Head Men's Lacrosse Coach

Buzzards Bay, Mass. --  Rick Bagby, who served for five seasons as an assistant coach at Babson College, has been named as Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach at Massachusetts Maritime.  Bagby’s appointment, which is effective immediately, was confirmed earlier today by Buccaneer Director of Athletics Garin Veris.

A resident of Marshfield Hills, Mass., Bagby has extensive experience at the collegiate, high school and club levels, including four seasons as the club coach at the University of Georgia and Northeastern University as well as a stint at Emerson College.  Bagby has recorded 180 victories in 14 high school campaigns that includes a 2008 Massachusetts state championship at Scituate High School, and he has also served in head coaching positions at Marshfield, Weymouth and Boston College High Schools.  A 1979 graduate of Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College, Rick graduated as the Tigers’ all-time leader in goals against average and saves percentage and fifth on school’s career saves list and will be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame on November 4th.

“Rick has been a winner at every level of lacrosse he has coached, and I’m pleased to welcome him to the Buccaneer family,” Veris said of Bagby’s appointment.  “His outreach in the New England lacrosse community has earned him the reputation as one of the top coaches in the region, and I know he will work hard both on and off the field to insure that our student-athletes are competing at a high level in the NEWMAC (New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference).”

During Bagby’s tenure at Babson (where he served as both the defensive coordinator and as a special assistant), the Beavers qualified for the NEWMAC playoffs each season and reached the league title match on four occasions.  At the high school level, Rick earned five conference coach of the year honors along the way, including the 2008 Boston Globe Coach of the Year accolade while at Scituate.

“It’s a great honor to serve in this position at the Academy, and I’m grateful to Garin Veris and the Massachusetts Maritime administration for the opportunity,” Bagby said of his appointment.  “I look forward to working with our student-athletes to set standards of excellence both on and off the field.  This school has earned an impeccable reputation for developing leaders in competition and in the community, and I look forward to building upon that tradition.”

In addition to his coaching experience, Bagby served as Director of Athletics at Emerson College from 1997-2002 before leaving Boston for a similar position at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., where he was brought in for his lacrosse expertise.  Rick was instrumental in helping the Knights declare as a Division I program and become a member of the Great West Conference alongside Notre Dame, Denver, Air Force, Ohio State, Fairfield and Butler, and in 2004 he returned to New England to resume his coaching career while also serving as president of his own company, 21 Lacrosse, Inc.

Massachusetts Maritime is set to begin the Rick Bagby era on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 when the Buccaneers host Becker at Clean Harbors Stadium at 7:00 pm EST.
