Maritime Drops NEWMAC Tilt to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seven unanswered goals during the second quarter helped MIT pull away and eventually capture a 14-5 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Five different players scored for the Buccaneers, who are winless in a pair of conference contests and 4-3 on the season.

MIT's Jack Kelly provided the first two goals of the game at the 11:41 and 5:53 marks and the Engineers added a third 26 seconds later. Maritime ended the shutout courtesy of a man-up goal from Franklin Ragge that was set up by Ted Powers with 4:10 on the clock. Powers then found Trey Guerrini with eight ticks left, helping the Buccaneers narrow the gap to 3-2.

The second stanza was all MIT, which scored eight unanswered goals, including four by Graham Davis. Powers ended the visitors' scoring drought when he connected on pass from Alexandre Lucas at the 13:10 mark of the third quarter. However, MIT's Jack Strachan slotted in three goals around an unassisted net-finder from Buc Samuel Hasting.

In a back-and-forth final frame, both squads registered a goal. Kenneth Parnell did the honors for Massachusetts Maritime after 1:03 expired while Morgan capped the scoring with 6:46 left to play.

Powers' three points led the visitors, as did his four shots on target. Parnell and Robert Macarthy both collected three groundballs for the Buccaneers. In net, Michael Dolan made nine saves on 19 shots during the first half while Matthew Pierson closed out the game with nine stops. MIT ended the day with advantages in shots (47-23), groundballs (46-24), and faceoff wins (18-4).

Strachan finished with three goals and an assist while Nicolas Gianni posted two goals and an assist. Luke Gianni won 15 of 17 faceoff attempts and amassed 12 groundballs as junior goalie Victor Fink made 11 saves. Senior David Klee led all players with five caused turnovers, tying the Institute record.
