BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Senior Nick Brett (Loudon, N.H.) scored four goals, while freshman Connor Gaffney (Andover, Mass.) added a hat trick and a pair of assists for five points to lead UMass Dartmouth to an 14-3 non-league college men’s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Markers by Gaffney and senior Christian Roberto (Wakefield, Mass.) staked the visiting Corsairs (8-1) to an early 2-0 advantage with 5:48 remaining in the opening quarter, and after junior John Hojnoski’s (West Springfield, Mass.) goal in the closing minute of the first stanza sliced the host Buccaneers’ (5-6) deficit in half, UMass Dartmouth netted three second quarter scores, including a pair from Brett, en route to a 5-1 advantage at the break. The visitors took control of the match with six third quarter goals as part of 12 unanswered tallies over a 34-plus minute stretch, including two each by Brett, Gaffney and junior Brendan Dalton (Braintree, Mass.), as the Corsairs held their largest advantage with just over nine minutes to play in notching their seventh straight triumph.
Dalton added a pair of assists to go with his two goals in the victory for UMass Dartmouth, which also received a pair of tallies and a helper off the stick of Roberto. Freshman Riley Baxter (Groton, Mass.) collected a goal and assist as well for the Corsairs, who received single tallies off the sticks of senior Alex Reposa (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Justin Lawless (Quincy, Mass.). Hojnoski added a fourth quarter score to finish with two goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a marker from junior Dan Langley (Abington, Mass.).
Sophomore Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Dartmouth with 11 saves in 52-plus minutes of play, while sophomore Paul Painten (Walpole, Mass.) made 14 stops in 55-plus minutes of action in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime. Freshman Eric Kuehn (Norwell, Mass.) made three saves over the final four-plus minutes for the hosts, as the Corsairs outshot the Buccaneers by a 39-20 margin for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Springfield in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League match on Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., while UMass Dartmouth heads to Boston on Saturday afternoon to take on UMass Boston in a Little East Conference contest that also begins at 1:00 p.m.
