Crew Squads Open Spring Campaigns With Four Runner-Up Performances At Amherst

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime crew squads opened their respective spring schedules with solid performances in competition against Mount Holyoke, Franklin Pierce and host Amherst on the Connecticut River Saturday afternoon.

 

The Buccaneer women’s varsity eight consisting of junior coxswain James Lucenta (Yorktown, Va.), juniors Rochelle Gaudette (Fall River, Mass.) and Laura Hahn (Colchester, Conn.), sophomores Christina Brennan (Halifax, Mass.), Summer Cawley (Riverview, Fla.) and Brianna Caissie (Webster, Mass.) as well as freshmen Olivia Swenson (Centerville, Mass.), Andie Painten (Walpole, Mass.) and Kaleigh Hoffman (Noblesville, Ind.), placed fourth with an overall time of 9:04.  Massachusetts Maritime’s women’s varsity four consisting of coxswain Lucenta, Brennan, Hahn, Hoffman and Caissie was third in a time of 10:33, while the women’s novice four comprised of coxswain Cawley, Gaudette, Painten, Swenson and freshman Cameron Harris-Browne (Lebanon, N.J.) finished second to Franklin Pierce in a time of 11:28.

 

The Buccaneer men’s varsity eight comprised of junior coxswain Matthew Peluso (Ledyard, Conn.), seniors Liam Barry (Wellesley, Mass.), Andrew Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) and Ryan Skavis (Shrewsbury, Mass.), juniors Michael Pieroni (Arlington, Mass.) and Jeffrey Kahler (Brattleboro, Vt.), as well as freshmen Nathanael Costa (Forestdale, Mass.), Patrick Wall (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Jacob Bernard (Kensington, Conn.), finished second to the hosts with a time of 7:47.  Massachusetts Maritime’s men’s varsity four consisting of coxswain Pieroni, Peluso, Murphy, Barry and Skavis also finished second to Amherst with a time of 7:47, while the men’s novice four of coxswain Kahler, Wall, Costa, Bernard and freshman Cameron MacLean (Townsend, Mass.) also finished as the runner-up to Amherst in a time of 9:05.

 

Both Buccaneer teams return to action on Saturday morning by heading to Lowell, Mass. to compete against Brandeis, Bryant, Endicott, Roger Williams, Wentworth and host UMass Lowell on the Merrimack River beginning at 9:00 a.m.
