Crew Squads Enjoy Busy Weekend Of Competition At Clark, Great Herring Pond In Pair Of Regattas

WORCESTER/BOURNE, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime crew squads competed in a pair of regattas over the weekend, as the Buccaneers posted impressive performances on Saturday afternoon on Lake Quinsigamond against Clark, Amherst, Bowdoin and Connecticut College before hosting Brandeis, Endicott, Roger Williams and UMass Lowell in action at the Keith Hartford Sailing Center on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Buccaneer men’s varsity four consisting of junior coxswain James Belbin (Carver, Mass.), juniors Ryan Skavis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Andrew Murphy (Randolph, Mass.) along with sophomores James Coburn (Higganum, Conn.) and Anthony Bratica (Milford, Mass.), finished fifth at Clark with a time of 7:41.31, as Bowdoin took top honors in the event.  Massachusetts Maritime’s women’s varsity four comprised of freshman coxswain Eduardo Quijano (Avon, Conn.), senior Jillian Stronk (Cheshire, Conn.), Christina Brennan and freshmen Summer Cawley (Riverview, Fla.) and Brianna Caissie (Webster, Mass.) placed sixth with a time of 10:29.58 on Saturday, as Connecticut College claimed the top spot in the race.  Additionally, the men’s second varsity four comprised of freshman coxswain Matthew Greenspan (Plantation, Fla.) and sophomores Michael Pieroni (Arlington, Mass.), Jeffrey Kahler (Brattleboro, Vt.), Matthew Peluso (Ledyard, Conn.) and Thomas Miceli (Unionville, Conn.) finished third with a time of 8:20.80, as Amherst took top honors in the event.

 

Sunday’s event on Herring Pond saw the Buccaneer men’s varsity four of coxswain Pieroni, Skavis, Murphy, Coburn and Bratica finish second to UMass Lowell, while the women’s varsity four of coxswain Quijano, Stronk, Brennan, Cawley and Caissie placed fifth with a time of 10:54.10, as the River Hawks took top honors in the event.  Massachusetts Maritime’s men’s second varsity four comprised of coxswain Greenspan, Miceli, Kahler, Peluso and senior Alexander Miemiec (Hebron, Conn.) posted a third place time of 8:48.12, with UMass Lowell again taking the top spot in the race.

 

Both Buccaneer squads head to Worcester, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete on Lake Quinsigamond against Amherst, Bowdoin, Connecticut College and host Clark beginning at 9:00 a.m.
