Crew Squads Open Spring Portion Of 2012-13 Schedule With Second, Third Place Finishes At Amherst

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime crew squads opened the spring portion of their respective schedules on Saturday afternoon with competition against both Franklin Pierce and host Amherst on the Connecticut River.

 

The men’s varsity four comprised of freshman coxswain Sophia Segatore (Plymouth, Mass.), senior Matthew Mourey (Franklin, Mass.), junior Alex Jagielski (Guilford, Conn.) and freshmen Ryan Skavis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Liam Barry placed second with a time of 8:14, while the women’s varsity four comprised of sophomore coxswain Ian Monfils (Hanson, Mass.), senior Gretchen Kramer (Stafford, Va.), junior Melanie Holder (Calidonio, Panama) and freshmen Brenda Weeks (Bourne, Mass.) and Cassie Swanson (Quincy, Mass.) finished third with a time of 9:27, as the host Lord Jeffs took top honors in both races on the day.

 

The men’s novice four comprised of freshman coxswain James Belbin (Carver, Mass.) and fellow freshmen Adam Butters (Gales Ferry, Conn.), Andrew Murphy (Randolph, Mass.), Eric DeMarines (Pepperell, Mass.) and Brody Forbes (Hanson, Mass.) finished second with a time of 8:05, while the men’s second novice four comprised of coxswain Chris Dwyer, Monfils, and freshmen Evan Nolan (Kingston, Mass.), Tristan Haugh (Wells, Maine) and Mitchell Bovarnick (Medfield, Mass.) also posted a second place finish with a time of 9:35, as Amherst also claimed top honors in those races.

 

The Buccaneers head to Worcester, Mass. next Saturday morning to take on Bowdoin, Brandeis, Roger Williams and host Assumption in competition on Lake Quinsigamond that begins at 9:00 a.m.
