Men's, Women's Varsity Fours Post Respective Third Place Finishes In Petite Finals For Crew At 2012 New England Rowing Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime men’s and women’s varsity fours posted third place finishes in the Petite Finals of their respective 2012 New England Rowing Championships that took place Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond, as both Buccaneer squads recorded ninth place overall finishes in their respective events.

The men’s varsity four consisting of freshman coxswain John Hubert (Trumbull, Conn.) along with juniors Josh Lamm (North Andover, Mass.), Matthew Mourey (Franklin, Mass.) and Devin McNeil (Westford, Mass.) as well as sophomore Alex Jagielski (Guilford, Conn.), placed fifth in their morning heat with a time of 7:34.8 before shaving 11 seconds off that mark in the Petite Final with a time of 7:23.6, as Massachusetts Maritime bested Clark, Boston College and Brandeis in the competition that saw Vermont claim the overall title.

The Buccaneer women’s varsity four consisting of freshman coxswain Jillian Stronk (Cheshire, Conn.) along with juniors Alicia Tarr (Danvers, Mass.), Lauren Denapoli (Boston, Mass.) and Janeen Manghis (Nantucket, Mass.), along with sophomore Kelsie Brien (Methuen, Mass.), posted a time of 8:35.9 in the Petite Final to best Roger Williams in competition that was claimed overall by Connecticut College.

The men’s novice four consisting of freshman coxswain Anthony Downs (West Roxbury, Mass.) along with fellow freshmen Paul Cullen (Gardner, Mass.), James Mattson (Marion, Mass.), Joshua Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) and Stephen Sweeney (West Roxbury, Mass.) posted a time of 8:00.7 to finish sixth in the Petite Final, shaving 18 seconds off their time from the morning heat, and the Massachusetts Maritime second men’s varsity four consisting of senior coxswain Juan Rivas (Dorchester, Mass.) as well as senior Mark Brien (Methuen, Mass.), sophomores Maxwell Horton (Malden, Mass.) and Andrew MacDonald (Franklin, Mass.) as well as freshman Ryan Gilliland (Barnstable, Mass.), placed fifth in their morning heat with a time of 8:12.2.
