Crew Squads Open Spring Portion Of 2011-12 Schedule With Competition Against Amherst, Franklin Pierce

HADLEY, Mass. --  Both Massachusetts Maritime crew teams began the spring portion of their respective 2011-12 schedules on Saturday afternoon with competition against both host Amherst and Franklin Pierce on the Connecticut River.

The women’s varsity four consisting of sophomore coxswain Alexander Jagielski (Guilford, Conn.) and juniors Lauren Denapoli (Boston, Mass.), Alicia Tarr (Danvers, Mass.), sophomore Kelsie Brien (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman Jillian Stronk (Cheshire, Conn.) finished fourth in competition with a time of 8:20, while the men’s varsity four consisting of freshman coxswain John Hubert (Trumbull, Conn.), Jagielski and juniors Josh Lamm (North Andover, Mass.), Matthew Mourey (Franklin, Mass.) and Devin McNeil (Westford, Mass.) finished second to Amherst with a time of 6:52.

The men’s second varsity four also finished second to Amherst, as the tandem of senior coxswain Sean O’Leary (East Falmouth, Mass.) and senior Mark Brien (Methuen, Mass.), sophomores Andrew MacDonald (Franklin, Mass.) and Maxwell Horton (Malden, Mass.) as well as freshman Ryan Gilliland (Barnstable, Mass.) posted a time of 7:36.  Both the Buccaneer men’s novice four and second men’s novice four also finished second to Amherst in competition, as the novice four of freshman coxswain Anthony Downs (West Roxbury, Mass.) and fellow freshmen Stephen Sweeney (West Roxbury, Mass.), Paul Cullen (Gardner, Mass.), Eric Holmes (Sutton, Mass.) and James Mattson (Marion, Mass.) posted a time of 7:39.  The men’s second novice four consisting of senior coxswain Juan Rivas (Dorchester, Mass.), senior Colin Giles (Brentwood, N.H.), sophomore Michael Tisdale (Leominster, Mass.) and freshmen Thomas Jackson (Stoneham, Mass.) and Joshua Leonardi (Sandwich, Mass.) finished with a time of 8:41.

Both Massachusetts Maritime squads head to Lowell, Mass. next Saturday morning for competition with UMass Lowell on the Merrimack River beginning at 9:00 a.m.
