Bucs Swept by Owls in MASCAC Doubleheader

WESTFIELD, Mass -- The Buccaneers baseball team traveled to Westfield State on Saturday for a conference doubleheader to complete their three-game MASCAC series. After winning the first game of the series at home on Friday the Bucs lost both games on the road to the Owls 3-0 and 7-6.

  • Nick Marshall and Ethan Day each recorded two hits. Devin Slattery, Sean Clark, and John Nickerson each had one hit.
  • Day hit a double, the only extra base hit in the game
  • Marshall drove in all three Owls runs. 
  • Robison Guerrero Baez scored two of the runs, Nickerson scored the third. 

How It Happened

Westfield scored their first run in the bottom of the first on a Marshall single. They added their second and third runs in the bottom of the second on another Marshall single scoring two. 

The Buccaneers were unable to muster a hit against Donohue and lost the first game 3-0.

  • Nick Marshall and Nolan Florence both recorded two hits.
  • Robison Guerrero Baez, Devin Slattery, Ethan Day, Dan Burnett, and Sean Clark all had one hit.
  • Marshall and Clark recorded doubles and Baez had a triple.
  • Burnett drove in two runs, five other players drove in one.
  • Slattery and Marshall scored twice. Baez, Day, and Florence all scored once.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers struck first in the top of the first with two runs on a Velzis double and a Tropea Single. The Bucs held their 2-0 lead for the first three and a half innings.

In the bottom of the fourth the Owls tied the game and took the lead for the first time. Slattery singled to bring in one, Day hit a sacrifice fly bringing in a second run to tie the game at 2-2, and Burnett singled to bring in another run giving the Owls a 3-2 lead after four.

The Westfield lead didn't last long with the Bucs retaking the lead in the top of the fifth. Velzis singled to score Sylvia and Tropea singled to score Logiudice giving the Buccaneers a 4-3 lead.

Maritime scored again in the top of the sixth inning on a Perito double that plated Estrada and an Owls miscue that allowed Perito to score. The Bucs were doubling up Westfield, 6-3, through five and a half. In the bottom of the sixth, the Owls scored three runs to tie the game at 6-6.

The Bucs were unable to retake the lead in the top of the seventh and in the bottom of the frame the Owls Trey Faulkner walked with the bases loaded scoring Slattery and walking Westfield off with the win, 7-6.

The Buccaneers are on the road on Wednesday, April 12th against Mitchell College in Connecticut at 4pm.
