Bucs Season Comes to an end in MASCAC Championship

BRIDGEWATER, MA -- On Saturday afternoon, the Buccaneers took on Bridgewater State in the MASCAC Championship in Bridgewater after beating Salem earlier in the day. The Bucs took an early lead and couldn't hold on as Bridgewater State won the 2022 MASCAC Championship, 7-4.

• Alex Shlapak and John Tropea each had two hits in the game.
• Michael Doyle, Zach Sylvia, Brett Velzis, Aidan Henderson, AJ Pietrafesa, A.J. Luciano, and Tucket Leslie all had one hit in the game.
• Schlapak, Doyle, Pietrafesa and Luciano drove in a run apiece.
• Doyle, Velzis, Henderson, and Luciano all scored runs.
• Doyle had the only extra-base hit of the game for the Bucs in the form of a home run.
• Doyle drew two walks at the plate.
• Sylvia and Luciano both had stolen bases in the game.

Bridgewater

• Joe Freschette led the Bears with three hits. Jonathan O'Donnell, Matthew Pigeon and Kevin Lindsay all had two hits.
• Freschette and O'Donnell drove in two runs. 
• Seven different players scored in the win.
• Pigeon recorded a triple with Freschette, O'Donnell, Shane Foley, Lindsay each having doubles.
• Freschette had a stolen base.

How It Happened

Like in their win over Salem, the Bucs scored first in this one on a home run from Doyle in the fourth inning. Later in the inning, Pietrafesa singled to right field to score Velzis giving the Bucs a 2-0 lead. Bridgewater answered immediately with two in the bottom of the inning. O'Donnell doubled to left center scoring Freschette. Pigeon then tripled to right center scoring O'Donnell.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bridgewater took their first lead of the game and extended it to 4-2. Frechette drove in the first run of the inning with Lindsay scoring. O'Donnell then reached on a fielder's choice bringing Wladkowski around to score.

Down 4-2, Maritime tied the game in the top of the sixth. Luciano grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Henderson and Schlapak singled to right center scoring Luciano. The score remained 4-4 through the top of the seventh.

After the seventh inning stretch, Bridgewater took the lead once again, this time for good. Frechette drove in the run on a single, scoring Emerson.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Bears scored two more to take the 7-4 lead that would prove to be the final to seal the MASCAC Championship for Bridgewater State.

Maritime finishes the season with 25 wins and is the runner up in the conference for the first time since 2016.
