Rams Eliminate Buccaneers from Playoff Contention with Walk off Win

FRAMINGHAM, Mass – Friday night, the Buccaneers travelled to Framingham State to take on the Rams in the opening game of the three-game weekend conference series. Needing a win and a series sweep to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Buccaneers dropped game on in the bottom of the ninth, 4-3.

How It Happened

Maritime scored first against the Rams, who, coming in to the night, sat in third place in the conference with an 11-7 MASCAC record. Marley Dembitzki (Dartmouth, Mass) singled to right, plating fellow senior Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass) to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead after the first half inning.

Framingham took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Kyle Dembrowski two-run home run over the centerfield fence. Up 2-1, the Rams took a two run lead in the second on an infield single to third base by Kyle Lippert.

Scoring was scarce in the middle innings with neither team able to score in the third, fourth or fifth, as the pitchers and defenses took over. In the sixth, the Bucs got a run back as Dembitzki drove in his second run of the game on a single to center, scoring Joe Sanchez (Dracut, Mass).

With the score 3-2, in favor of the Rams, Dembitzki struck again for Maritime, driving in a third run in the eighth, this time on a single to right, bringing Sanchez in to score again. The Buccaneers had chipped their way back in to the game. The teams went to the ninth inning tied at threes.

After Maritime went down 1-2-3 in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the ninth, Lippert was hit by a pitch, the Buccaneers recorded two outs and then Andrew Curtis singled and advanced to second on an outfield throw to third trying to cut down Lippert who had gone first to third. With runners on second and third, the Buccaneers threw a wild pitch, allowing Lippert to score the fourth and winning run for the Rams in their 4-3 victory.
